News: a great Italian band presenting their debut last year…and you can listen to it for free! We’re speaking of “Le maschere di Clara” and their record “ANAMORFOSI” where they present an exciting fusion of modern classical “Rock in Opposition”-elements a la Yugen, Aranis or Present, a David-Cross-violin and typical italian pathos!
You can stream the record on their website and either download it or contact Charly Heidenreich for the record (to our knowledge he’s the only distributor in Germany – ask us for email-adress)!

a Happy New year to everybody! The first big thing to come this year is the concert of “Once upon the time in Belgium” which is Univers Zero, Present and Aranis simultaniously on one stage in Lyon on February, 3rd! They already showed up on stage at the RIO fest in Carmaux last autumn and as one of us said, “the greatest concert of my life” – and belive it, this guy has seen loads of concerts…
So check it out and go there – we’d be happy to meet you ’round!

RIP Vaclav Havel. One of a kind. A dissident playwright become president of a country. Slipped his minders (while in NY to speak to the UN General Assembly) and sneaked downtown to check out what was happening at CBGB. How many world leaders could you say that about? I met him in Prague in 1979. He’d just been released from jail, and came to see Art Bears perform at a festival sponsored by the “Jazz section” of the musicians union, which was promptly disbanded by the communist authorities. We all went drinking afterwards, and, of course, I remember nothing about it! Later when the world was upside down my friend Iva Bittová traveled the world as an official cultural ambassador and all of our rock and roll connections seemed to be directly connected with the those now in power; a (short-lived) surreal, astonishing adventure in a world of grim, pragmatism. If anyone could have persuaded Henry Cow to reform it was Havel. If Lindsay hadn’t been sick, we might even have done it…

1989 was a sad year – not much happened but the ostensible (haha – OSTensible…) tumbling down of the communist systems all over the world, the end of the war in Afghanistan and so on…some of us hugged our GDR ethnic brothers…some didn’t…
As became apparent in the last days this tumbling down was rather a mere window-dressing…a “New Skin for the Old Ceremony” (Leonard Cohen record from’73) – “Sad but True” (you know what this is, right?!)…
Also, 3 days ago the 40th anniversary of the burning down of the Casino in Montreux was “celebrated” with a lot of smoke on the water” and “fire in the sky” – this burning down happened during a Frank Zappa show, so not completely irrelevant to our show…for more information and pictures and so on, check out the Montreux Jazz Festival’s blogpost http://www.montreuxjazz.com/news/42
Anyhow, even in these unspectacular days spectacular music was recorded and will be brought to you in these unspectacular days by the best radio show in the world – week after week and still going…check it out – we promise entertainment, fun, a variety of different musical styles and a really pleasureful evening!

Moin moin, oder – wie man im hohen Norden sagt – Hoi Zäme,
fast haben wirs geschafft – das durch dunkle Jahrzehnt – bezüglich fast allem – haben wir euch sicher gelotst und sind beinahe schon auf der anderen Seite des Styx angekommen – doch halt – fast ist nicht ganz und zwei 8er am Anfang haben wir noch für euch! Heute mit Schnapszahl – keine braune Propaganda sondern das Jahr aus dem wir euch heute wieder einiges zu berichten haben werden wie ihr sehen werdet 🙂
Durchschnaufen!
Bunt wirds auf alle Fälle – schräger Chicago-Prog entdeckte das Licht der Welt, selbige Beleuchtung fiel auch so langsam auf ein zart keimendes Genre namens ProgMetal, einige Leute behaupten der Post-Rock wäre erfunden worden und garniert wird das ganze natürlich mit jeder Menge RIO und als Kirsche kommt natürlich ein kunterbuntes Allerlei vom Meister der Herzen und eurem neuen Freund Fred Frith obendrauf!
Will heissen: Anschalt- und Zuhör-Befehl wenn’s heute Abend zwischen 20 und 22:00 auf Radio Radius mal wieder heisst:
Gute Musik!!!
Sidenote: trotzdem arm dass man das extra ankündigen muss wenn im Radio mal Hörbares kommt…

Drei Jahre nach ihrem starken Debüt, welches sie im Internet kostenlos als Download verschenkt haben und im Eigenverlag vertrieben haben, kommt das neue Album Ocean Cosmonauts nun über ein Label heraus. Dort kann nun auch ihr erstes Album für lau als gebrannte CD bestellen, im Jewelcase und mit einfachen Cover. Die Neue gibt es dafür im Digipack. Weiterhin kann man auch dieses Album gratis auf der Homepage der Band herunterladen.
Von der Besetzung her gibt es einen Wechsel am Bass, neuerdings zupft Carlos Schonert den Bass.
Von der musikalischen Seite aus gibt es auch ein paar Unterschiede. Generell wird hier immer noch ein technisch gekonnter, leichtfüßiger Mathrock vorgetragen, wie man ihn vom Erstling kennt. Jedoch ist der Sound deutlich postrockiger geworden, es wird viel mehr wiederholt und in die Länge gezogen. Auch gibt es mehr postrock-typisches Riffing. Die Auftritte mit Bands wie This Will Destroy You, Russian Circles und Caspian scheinen Spuren hinterlassen zu haben. Trotzdem ist Jardín De La Croix technisch viel komplexer unterwegs als eine Standard Postrockband. Aber im Vergleich zum Debüt, ist das Ganze doch schon geradliniger und nicht mehr so verspielt und abwechslungsreich. Auf den Vorgänger hat man sich von einer Idee zur nächsten gehangelt und auch immer wieder unterschiedlich klingende Passagen eingebaut. Hier klingt nun alles gleichförmiger und es gibt weniger Abwechslung pro Stück.
Dadurch ist das Album auch härter und klingt auch stellenweise fast wie normaler Metal. Die Gitarren spielen entweder typische Metal-Riffs, die oft wiederholt werden oder aber sie legen (viel häufiger als auf dem Debüt) in Fripp-Manier los. Diese Arpeggio-Läufe sind zum Teil auch wegen des Tempos sehr beeindruckend, aber auch auf diesen wird oftmals zu lange herumgeritten ohne das die Intensität steigt, so dass Langweile aufkommt.
Das Album konnte mich darum nicht durchgehend unterhalten und ist mit 55 Minuten auch zu lange. Das ist für ein rein instrumentales Album nur mit Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug natürlich auch keine leichte Aufgabe. Und dafür ist es immer noch gut, technisch anspruchsvoll und bestens eingespielt. Aber auf dem Vorgänger haben sie es geschafft den Zuhörer immer wieder bei Laune zur halten. Dieses hier ist dafür härter, gleichförmiger und hat damit seine Längen. Eine ordentliche Platte zum nebenbei laufen zu lassen, ist sie aber allemal.

d) incredible but true – “even in the saddest moments” (adapted from Supertramp) or years like ’87 we found some glimmering highlights of recorded noise!!! some actually quite listenable tunes by some call-themselves-musicians such as to-the-regularly-listening-folks well-known Zurigo- based FF (no – not “fortissimo” – an actuall name).
so another chilly evening with your favourite radio-men which will teach other pieces of wisdom such as “Not everyone is as rich as your parents”, present you “Swiss Ländler-music goes avantgarde”, scandinavian Solos, japanese drum-chaotics, and all that kind of skits!
