Rock Bottom, established in 1993 and located not far from Piazza della Repubblica (attention: the store recently moved and some of the web references provide a wrong address), is one of Florence’s best-assorted records shops regarding rare 70s Italian Progressive Rock if it comes to original pressings as well as represses. Some of them are rare rare rare and hard to find elsewhere, not even on the Internet. To the customers best convenience, the two “classes” of records are labeled “originale” and “repress” and even “2nd press”es are marked as such. Among nearly all genres, a distinguished catalogue of Indie pressings may be found among which there are rare items e.g. Sigur Ros‘s (). Also, Avantgarde / Rock In Opposition fans can trace items from Art Bears to Henry Cow pressings. The staff is helping but a little short on words, so don’t expect to find an opportunity for an extensive music-enthusiasts discussion here.
The prices for the represses and the Indie records are adequate whereas the numbers on the original pressings are, well, exorbitant – surely the extreme rarity and the exclusivity of the stock justifies some of them but in my opinion e.g. 150 € for a Kevin Ayers record is overcast. Also, the prices are not negotiable and any tries during my visit were quickly shot down.
Their well-designed and informative website, which is also available in English and which provides the possibility to mailorder, is www.rockbottom.it and the address is
